The National Theatre’s Coriolanus

On November 19, members of the Edwards Collective ventured into a cold, wet night to view a filmed version of Donmar Warehouse’s 2014 production of Shakespeare’s late Roman tragedy Coriolanus (starring Tom Hiddleston in the title role) at the Princeton Garden Theater. The production, which took the color crimson as its defining aesthetic feature, captured a bloody, brutal, and visceral early Rome self-consciously at odds with the golden luxury and decadence a Roman setting usually conjures in the modern theater. This digital excursion is in part preparation for a larger Shakespeare adventure in early December, when select members will see a highly anticipated all-female production of Henry IV at Brooklyn’s Donmar Warehouse.
